Herbert Smith was born November 13, 1886 in Effort, Pennsylvania.
As a young man he met Mary Estella Green at a dance at Hotel 57, Trachsville, PA.
The were married and lived near Lehighton, PA. Their children were Sphener, William (died at age 6 mo.), Stanley, Alvin, Verdie, and Alice.

They lived in a small house at Wild Creek
,where Sphener was born, then at Hotel 56 where Stanley was born, then moved to the lower end of White Street, Weissport, PA.
It was the last house on the street and is still there (1989). They operated a small truck farm, selling produce from their garden.
